How much RAM your computer actually needs?
Our systems use RAM to store the applications or temporary data on which user is working, Such as Performing operations on MS Word documents, Power Point Presentations, Chatting with friend in Internet, browsing and Playing a video in the system requires a very little RAM. For example if you are using the computer or laptop for this purposes least 512 MB RAM is required. But i strongly recommend to use 1 GB RAM...

1 GB RAM
If you are using your system for basic operations such as documentation processing , web browsing , checking mails, Listening to music , watching Videos, Playing Simple Games and using Adobe Photoshop for image processing operations. 1 GB RAM is recommended only for 32-bit operating systems, It is not recommended for 64 bit operating systems.You can check whether your operating system supports 32 bit or 64 bit by this post...how-to-know-whether-your-system.html
2 GB RAM
If you want your computer capable of playing most games, video editing , Online Multi player Games, Microsoft Word 2010 and above versions and you can use so many tabs in the web browser easily which is not possible in 1 GB RAM.
3. 4 GB RAM
If you are using windows 8 or Windows 7 with 64 bit operating system, then you need to use 4 GB RAM. You can do so many tasks simultaneously with the help of the 4 GB RAM.. You can play High definition Video games and watch HD movies without any problem by using 4 GB RAM..
4. 8 GB RAM
If you have money to spend you can buy the 8 GB and get better performance compared to 4 GB.
If the budget is low then i mostly recommend you to use the 2 GB or 4 GB RAM otherwise you can use 8 GB RAM. If you are thinking about to use laptop in the future use mostly i recommend to use expandable memory from 4 GB to 8 GB
Web Browsing, checking mails, Listening to music and word processing : 1 GB- 2 GB
Playing HD Games , Watching HD movies and performing ------------------4 GB -- 8GB
large amount of image and video processing
